How to colorize black and white images?

We all have old black and white photos in our closets. Who would not like to restore the colors of these photos? The problem is that colorizing images is not an easy task. You have to get the right software, the time and especially the skills. Here at NeededApps, we designed an application named PhotosRevive available for Mac, iPhone, and iPad so that anyone can colorize any vintage images in minutes. We present the tool in this article.

What is PhotosRevive, and how can the app help me?

PhotosRevive is an application for macOS (10.13 or later) and iOS (12.0 or later) that has been designed to colorize your old photos. The application does two things. The first one is that it adds colors to your photos automatically thanks to one of the best artificial intelligence of the domain. The second most important thing is that the app allows you to enhance the rendering via color hints. So, in a few clicks, you can improve colors and get the perfect photo.

PhotosRevive - Steps

In the same way as some other apps on the market, the app colorizes images automatically (Original → Colorized). However, none of these alternative apps can improve the result, while PhotosRevive can do it (Colorized → Enhanced). In the rest of this article, we deliberately chose an image that can not be colorized automatically appropriately. This failure can be explained by the too dark colors and the presence of Santa Claus. (the photo is below.)

Step 1: How open an image and colorize it?

In the same way as any application, the first thing to do is to launch the app. Then we can import the image with a simple drag-n-drop.

PhotosRevive - Step 1

The application automatically colorizes the image. The result is as we can see it very disappointing. While all other domain applications cannot do more than this step, we’ll see how PhotosRevive can improve the resulting image very quickly.

PhotosRevive - Step 2

Step 2: How to improve the result by adjusting colors?

The goal of this step is to improve black and white colors. For this, you have to play with the sliders on the top right. With these, you can make the dark areas darker and the light areas lighter. Thus, the different regions of the image are more easily distinguishable by the AI.

PhotosRevive - Step 3

We can see that the blue spots have disappeared and that the faces are correctly colorized. For most photos, you can stop at this step. However, we will have to add color indications to enhance this one.

Step 3: How to improve the result by adding indications?

We deliberately chose a complicated image. Indeed, the presence of Santa Claus is not detected by the AI. To fix this, you only have to click on Santa Claus. The click adds a color indication. Then you have to choose a red tone in the color grid. The AI understands the information and automatically colors all the clothes of Santa Claus in red.

PhotosRevive - Step 4

Similarly, we will add blue indications for the little boy’s clothes and green dots for the trees in the background.

PhotosRevive - Step 5

We end up adding white color indications on the gloves. Thus we get an image correctly colorized. In spite of a complicated initial photo, we colorize it without any knowledge in the field and auxiliary tools.

Where can I download PhotosRevive?

If you want to colorize your old photos, you need PhotosRevive. Thanks to its included artificial intelligence, the app is the most efficient solution in the market. Moreover, the indications of colors allow you to control the rendering precisely. A demo version of the Mac app is available on our website. You can also find the app in the Mac App Store and iOS App Store.
